DESCRIPTION:The Understudies (London) – Building on the foundation of two acclaimed albums and a reputation for live performances that are equal parts Bad Seeds intensity\, Auteurs irreverence and Tindersticks intimacy\, they returned to live performance in 2023 with a clutch of new material and renewed vitality. 2024 promises to continue the forward momentum with further gigs\, new songs and new recordings. \nA New International (Glasgow) – Performing in their cabaret trio formation for this gig\, A New International came to be in 2013.  Raised from the ashes of The Starlets\, they are New Scottish romanticism; a little bit of this and a whole lot of that\, searching for another pop music. Singer/Songwriter Biff describes ANI’s ethos as “a band that\, in the best possible sense\, didn’t sound like a band: a band that sounded like\, let’s say…a movie or a circus or a funeral or a riot; anything but another dreary band“. \nMatthew Stead (Gloucester) – Matthew Stead was the man behind Indiepop mainstays A Fine Day For Sailing\, and made his mark on SE London’s scene with the legendary Read And Shout event in 2011\, roping in Jens Lekman to play at and help save West Norwood library. Nowadays he makes pop music in the Forest of Dean when he’s not touring the world teaching ukulele. He has a new record of pop gems out this year and will be playing songs from it live.

My plan is for the film to play out almost as a day in the life of the pub – we’ll see the huge variety of events which go on each week\, the comings and goings of regulars\, and the day to day processes involved in running a vibrant London pub. Ultimately I want the film to serve as a reminder that in modern Britain\, where it’s increasingly common to feel disconnected from one’s local community\, it’s more important than ever to preserve physical spaces where everyone is welcome.”

Fightmilk’s 2021 sophomore album Contender was a marked step forward for the band\, blending acerbic lyrics and riffs galore to make a record chock full of high energy heartbreak and pop songs to make you and your parents dance. They’re currently preparing to release their third album\, which deals with diet culture\, death\, and dog bites.

DESCRIPTION:The Embers are a five-piece folk and roots band\, bringing together the story-telling tradition of British folk music with the soul of Americana and a bluegrass swing. Performing regularly in London\, and at a host of festivals and venues across the UK\, they bring sorrowful harmonies\, driving rhythms and break-neck fiddle to keep you dancing and sobbing into the night in equal measure. \nDublin troubadour Rob Corcoran is a much respected figure on the London roots scene\, with folk legend Christy Moore including his version of Corcoran’s brilliant ‘Ringing That Bell’ as a key song in his current touring set\, and on his recently released live album. Corcoran’s lyrically compelling\, beautifully observed songs are drenched in Celtic soul\, drawing from the same deep wells that serve Van Morrison and Mike Scott so well. Present too is a strong thread of influence from the heart-on-sleeve poetry of John Prine\, Hank Williams and Leonard Cohen.
