DESCRIPTION:On July 27th\, from 6PM till late join Goldsmiths UCU and allies at the Ivy House for a night of music and comradeship in support of Rob and of all precarious Goldsmiths workers \nAfter years of unparalleled academic and political work at Goldsmiths\, our colleague\, friend\, teacher\, caseworker\, and union branch co-Secretary Roberto Mozzachiodi was denied his redundancy rights and forced to leave Goldsmiths. Rob’s story mirrors that of thousands across the country employed on temporary\, fixed-term\, and precarious contracts whose rights as workers are routinely trampled on. \nThis night is for showing solidarity to Rob and all workers like him who are struggling for their rights. We’ll have amazing speakers from SE London and beyond\, with whom to think about experiences of precarity in work and life and strategies to collectivize our resistance. We’ll also have great music and a most excellent raffle to raise funds for the Goldsmiths Mutual-Aid Fund\, which since 2020 has supported precarious workers at Goldsmiths through the Covid-19 pandemic and several rounds of industrial action. Can’t wait to see you there !

DESCRIPTION:Oxford based label and promotion Divine Schism take over The Ivy House for the first time\, bringing with them a sweltering line-up. \nKONE make art music for guitars. The three members write collectively for guitars\, voice and drums\, treating each instrument equally. Their songs are sparse\, heavy and dance-like – built from shifting\, interlocking patterns. \nJunodefriginally formed by Karin and Tyra when they met in highschool in Lund\, Sweden\, Norea joined the band after they put a call out for a last minute drummer to join them for a show. Since then\, Junodef have been honing their sound as a trio. “We started as punk musicians with strong connections in the DIY-scene. We would put on gigs ourselves\, press CD’s and record in various basements just to learn as much as we could on a zero budget!” Having made a name for themselves in Sweden\, the band decided to relocate to London to push themselves to new heights with their music. Since then\, Junodef have toured with Editors in Europe and supported bands like Blonde Redhead\, Emma Ruth Rundle and Goat Girl. \nJunodef’s new music showcases the band at their most authentic. The beauty in the way that Junodef craft their sound is their ability to combine the strengths and influences from each band member\, effortlessly weaving together a sound that is transcendent of genre yet deeply personal to the band. \nWith their new EP ‘Catastrophical’ set for release on 16 June\, 2023 shows no signs of slowing down for the multi-faceted trio\, watch this space. \nMeredith are a brand new gloom grunge ensemble!

Since forming in 2017\, the trio of Sam Day Harmet (mandolin/electronics)\, Sana Nagano (violin/effects)\, and Zachary Swanson (upright bass) has carved out a distinctive sonic space. American roots music coexists with electronics-spiked free improv\, Downtown skronk\, and on the new album\, manipulated samples sourced from Tennessee\, Wisconsin\, and their home city of Brooklyn\, NY. \nGENTLE STRANGER are a London group with a cult following. Embracing traditional folk\, noise\, prog-rock and comedy\, the group instil in everything they do a ‘post-clown’ ethos that flits between pastiche\, parody\, burlesque and other experimental forms for a truly off-kilter live experience. \nCIRENNE are a Bristol duo who make experimental\, spacey\, klezmer-tinged music for trumpet and violin.

DESCRIPTION:Fallon’s Angler Deputy Editor and Countryfile correspondent Kevin Parr introduces wildlife cameraman Jack Perks (Springwatch\, Countryfile) and the London Premiere of his acclaimed film. \nEnjoy the film on the big screen\, followed by a Q&A between Kevin and Jack\, all wrapped up in an evening of mingling and chat. \nAbout the film… \nFilmed over the course of two years this documentary puts a long-overdue spotlight on the underdogs of British fauna; our fish. In the course of highlighting their stories and challenges it reveals behaviours never filmed before. As well as the marine waters around our coasts\, we also explore the chalk streams\, lakes\, rivers and ponds that make up our freshwater habitats. This is the first time Britain’s fish have been showcased in this way to reveal their secretive world. Narrated by Jeremy Wade. \nIn spring 2021\, wildlife cameraman Jack Perks ran a crowdfunding campaign to make this one hour\, cinema-quality film. He assembled an extraordinarily talented crew of editors\, composers\, consultants and camera operators\, including Jeremy Wade (of River Monsters fame) who narrated the film. We are proud to congratulate Jack and his colleagues by presenting the London Premiere. \nKevin Parr is a writer\, angler and amateur naturalist. DESCRIPTION:The Monochrome Set return to The Ivy House to promote their 16th album\, ‘All Hallowtide’. \nFeaturing original Monochrome Set members Bid (Guitar/Vocals) and Andy Warren (bass) with Athen Ayren on keyboards and Stephen Gilchrist on drums.\nThe Monochrome Set formed in 1978\, and were heavily influential in the ‘post-punk’ scene that evolved after the initial scorched earth of punk. \nThe band’s early releases were on the legendary Rough Trade Label before signing with Virgin offshoot Din Disc. They also released several albums on the Cherry Red label\, making a notable appearance on that labels’ well known ‘Pillows and Prayers’ compilation. Though The Monochrome Set split in 1985 the next decade saw several reunions for both live gigs and further studio recordings. \nAfter a hiatus of over a decade the band reformed full time in 2010 and have since toured all over the UK\, Europe\, Japan and the USA\, whilst also releasing seven new\, critically acclaimed\, studio albums. Now in their 45th year\, they are beginning a new series of gigs promoting their latest album and playing songs old and new. \nSupport from Sergeant Buzfuz and The Bloodstreams

A spoken word artist and musician\, he has contributed poems to Mercury-nominated albums ‘Channel The Spirits’ by The Comet Is Coming\, ‘Your Queen Is A Reptile’ and the Mobo winning “Black Is The Future”\, both by Sons of Kemet. \nMore recently\, he formed Calabashed with Alabaster DePlume\, a spiritual jazz crew who were recently named a 2021 one-to-watch by NME\, and worked with LA electronic maestro Daedelus on the critically acclaimed mini LP\, “Holy Water Over Sons”. \nIn 2023\, Idehen comes to The Ivy House for an intimate performance of his own solo work. The next cinema night\, 6th June\, we will be screening Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001) dir. John Cameron Mitchell! \n“The queer punk-rock musical about Plato\, the Berlin Wall\, love\, gender\, fame and self-acceptance started first as a stage show before becoming a much-loved cult film with a fervent fandom of “Hedheads” that unwaveringly adore it. \nThe story centres on Hedwig\, a singer in a punk-rock band from East Berlin now living in Kansas following botched gender reassignment surgery that left them with an “angry inch”. Hedwig has their heart broken twice\, first by the GI who coerced them into the operation to allow them to marry and emigrate\, and then by Tommy Gnosis\, who fell in love with Hedwig but then stole their songs and used them to become the rock star Hedwig always wanted to be. It’s a tale that many have a deep connection to\, not just because it’s hilarious\, heart-breaking and has a phenomenal\, timelessly cool\, soundtrack but also because it taps into the fundamental question of identity and how it’s shaped by the relationships we have.”
