SUMMARY:Sticky Fingers Cinema: Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001)
DESCRIPTION:Sticky Fingers Publishing presents a monthly feminist queer cinema night at the Ivy House\, Nunhead. Each evening will begin with two short films followed by a headline feature\, with drinks\, pizza and more available. Expect camp classics\, cult favourites\, feminist DIY fantasies\, and much more. The next cinema night\, 6th June\, we will be screening Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001) dir. John Cameron Mitchell! \n“The queer punk-rock musical about Plato\, the Berlin Wall\, love\, gender\, fame and self-acceptance started first as a stage show before becoming a much-loved cult film with a fervent fandom of “Hedheads” that unwaveringly adore it. \nThe story centres on Hedwig\, a singer in a punk-rock band from East Berlin now living in Kansas following botched gender reassignment surgery that left them with an “angry inch”. Hedwig has their heart broken twice\, first by the GI who coerced them into the operation to allow them to marry and emigrate\, and then by Tommy Gnosis\, who fell in love with Hedwig but then stole their songs and used them to become the rock star Hedwig always wanted to be. It’s a tale that many have a deep connection to\, not just because it’s hilarious\, heart-breaking and has a phenomenal\, timelessly cool\, soundtrack but also because it taps into the fundamental question of identity and how it’s shaped by the relationships we have.”

SUMMARY:Mango Wax Records: Label Launch Party
DESCRIPTION:Mango Wax Records is a label dedicated to shining a light on artists who operate outside of the conventions of others and works to bring their creativity to the fore\, with live music from… \nMaximilian\nLando Manning\nSasha & The Shades\nMiles Dee \nStarted by Lando Manning in 2021 as a means to release his own music\, Mango Wax Records is a label with a mission to create an inclusive community of artists away from the dogma of the modern independent music scene. \nAfter gigging on both the London and Brighton circuits\, Lando became frustrated with the lack of diversity in artists and in particular the lack of diversity in songwriting styles. \n“I was sick of seeing image being placed before musical quality. The same types of bands\, on the same overcrowded bills\, on repeat. People riding on the coat-tails of a movement with no thought to what they were actually creating.” – Lando Manning\, Mango Wax Records Founder \nA South London based label committed to shining a light on artists who are otherwise buried under the genre-restricted\, gate kept landscape of the modern music industry. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Luke Wright and Martin Rowson: I.V. at The Ivy House
DESCRIPTION:Luke Wright and Martin Rowson grace The Ivy House stage for an evening of poems\, preening and vaguely erudite wittering. \nReturning after a spellbinding show at The Ivy House last year\, we’re thrilled to have two of the sharpest wordsmiths in the country back on our stage. \nLuke Wright is one of Britain’s most celebrated stand-up poets. In 2021 he won the Saboteur Award for Best Spoken Word Artist and the Telegraph dubbed him. ‘the bard of lockdown.’ His latest collection is The Feel-Good Movie of the Year\, of which Ian Duhig said: ‘This is a terrific new book: subtle\, nuanced and movingly personal. A hurt man\, taking stock in fresh words. \nThe multi-award winning Martin Rowson is the Guardian’s chief cartoonist and the author of over 40 books. He brings the same ferocity and verve to his poetry as he does his art. In May 2020 he set himself the challenge of writing a Lockdown Diary in verse. The result is Plague Songs\, a unique cycle of furious\, bleakly comic and often offensive poems about COVID-19\, fiercely inventive and desperately funny.

SUMMARY:Folklore: Lichen w/ Mock Deer and Frankie Murrow
DESCRIPTION:Folklore present an evening of live music with Lichen\, Mock Deer and Frankie Murrow. \nLichen \nLichen is the band project of South London-based songwriter Michael Clark. Lichen’s style is languid on the surface\, yet masterful and refined in structure and arrangement. There is a heady marriage between this cultivated formula and the intensity of the themes\, the subject matter\, and the lyrical dispositions that Michael has crafted over the years. \nMock Deer \nMock Deer (Ricky Damiani) is a musician\, singer and songwriter based in London. Although much of his life has been spent in North Wales and Manchester\, he has become an integral part of the capital’s independent music scene via his prolific work with fellow artists from the city and beyond. He has toured extensively in Europe and shared the stage with artists such as Brent Cobb\, Sam Brookes\, Simon Joyner\, The Burning Hell\, Nadine Khouri and Curtis Eller. \nFrankie Murrow \nAlmost a decade after playing in various outfits together and separately on the west coast of Scotland from the tender age of 14\, a chance meeting on a train back home for Christmas from London brought childhood friends Frankie Morrow (electric guitar\, lead vocals) James Smith (bass) and Duncan Carswell (drums) back together once more. After two failed attempts at getting together they finally formed a band in January 2022.

SUMMARY:Reel News: Everything Must Change
DESCRIPTION:Come and join us for our usual informal blend of film\, discussion\, music\, drinks and resistance for a major new Reel News film – EVERYTHING MUST CHANGE. \nWe are faced with rapidly accelerating multiple crises. Energy bills\, housing costs and food prices are all shooting up\, there is a lack of secure\, well-paid jobs\, and on top of that if we don’t take drastic steps to bring down carbon emissions by the end of the decade\, runaway climate change is inevitable. But all these things are connected. \nWe are in this mess because of a fossil fuel economy based on profit and injustice – but we could solve all these crises if we moved towards a renewable energy economy based on people’s needs and social justice. We need to start seeing all these crises as different aspects of the same struggle – and then get organised with a long-term plan and vision to change everything. \nThis film will hopefully contribute to a debate about how we do that\, with numerous examples of inspiring struggles and campaigns that can lead us to a worker-led “just transition”. So come and join us to have that debate over a drink\, get organised\, and dream of another world that is definitely possible!

SUMMARY:Stanchion: Nooruddean Choudry
DESCRIPTION:Join Stanchion Books and HarperNorth for the London launch for Nooruddean Choudry’s debut book Inshallah United : A Story of Faith and Football. \n—- \nThe book: \n‘For every Manc a religion’ \nManchester. Birthplace of industry\, the Stone Roses\, the Class of 92 and\, in 1979\, a small brown man called Noz. This is the story of how\, and why\, he came to be a strictly halal Stretford Ender. \nNooruddean Choudry was born in 1979 – the year Margaret Thatcher became Prime Minister\, Sid Vicious died of a heroin overdose\, Ayatollah Khomeini overthrew the last Shah of Iran\, and Tim Martin opened his first Wetherspoons. Also that year\, a local football club lost the Cup Final to Arsenal courtesy of a man named Sunderland. That club would become an all-consuming obsession for young Nooruddean\, who would one day become a small brown man and\, vitally\, also a Red. \nInshallah United is the story of the first British-born son of a Pakistani family living in England’s second city. And geography is important\, because if it wasn’t for his mum and dad settling in Manchester rather than anywhere else in the world\, so much of what makes up Nooruddean’s identity could have been so different. As it was\, he grew up as a Muslim\, Manchester United supporting\, Morrissey-loving\, Maggie-hating\, working-class Manc. \nInshallah United is about growing up as a strictly halal Stretford Ender; a devout Muslim and diehard Red. It’s about praying five times a day that United would sign Alan Shearer and knock the Scousers off their perch. And it’s a deeply personal account of life as a Muslim Asian Mancunian kid in the late 80s and 90s\, bookmarked by the most successful period in Manchester United’s history. \n— \nThe participants: \nNooruddean Choudry\, also known as Bearded Genius\, has c. 170k Twitter followers and is one of the more prominent commentators on all things Manchester United\, as well as a lot of other random things that interest him. He has worked for the Red Issue fanzine\, and written for the Mirror\, the Guardian and others about football. He was Creative Director at JOE\, covering and writing about subjects away from football\, like politics\, culture\, social issues\, etc. He tweets @BeardedGenius.

SUMMARY:G Spot O Zone
DESCRIPTION:G Spot O Zone. Stirring performance into one zone/ one spot \nA series of live works going into music\, 8 acts \nThis event is not about the climate but any loose ecology interpretation is welcomed and encouraged \nDoors 7:30pm \n8-11pm \n— \nLINEUP \nMargarita Frančeska Ieva Loze is an artist who works cross-disciplinary between embroidery\, writing\, hand-drawn stop motion and sculpture. In her video\, a Limbo a Miracle a Quick Dust a\, Margarita explores intimacy\, memories\, and the poetic wandering of the world. Through the narratology of discontinuous remembrances and loops of nostalgia\, she interweaves together the sensitivity and curiosity of unnoted past experiences. \nTheia Maldoom is a dance artist. Currently\, she is interested in questioning what it means to be a dancer\, improvising and working in multiple mediums including writing and visual arts. Theia will perform a 15 minute improvisation with movement and voice. She listens/ follows/ ignores/ leads. \nLondon based multimedia artist Jaime Martinez Lopez has been shaping his personal vision of video\, sound and performance for the past several years; fusing them and creating a new way of introducing/experiencing video-performance through large installations. Through intense immersive experiences\, his work aims to provoke emotions in the viewer to question and consider matters of society. Identity\, the body\, the mind and the spiritual. \nMax Melvin is an artist who practices improvisation as a medium. He writes as performance\, using his voice and a typewriter simultaneously. \nFour hands meet is a project centred around a performative approach of drawing as well as an active conversation with live sound. It focuses on seeing the act of drawing as something that goes beyond the “static image” that comes from hidden processes\, but on the contrary\, seeks to unveils these very processes. \nThrough their collaboration\, Michal Adamczewski and Sarah-Athina Nahas want to invite the viewer into their unspoken\, experimental conversation\, made of ambient sounds and somewhat ritualistic images. \nMelanie Christine responds to and challenges order\, codes and preconceptions\, and invites the reader to embark on a poetic journey\, shifting the balance between the controlled and the chaotic\, the sterile and the viscous. Using Boneca Melucci\, her performance persona\, she tackles dirt-ridding\, hyper clean Western culture and invites the viewer to reconsider natural body waste\, cleaning rituals and multilayered identities through screens. \nRachel Lonsdale is an artist who puts questions to roles and environments she encounters until it spills into absurdity. By doing this\, she creates fictional narratives that exist in the form of performance\, text\, intervention and writing. She’s interested in the concepts of spectacle and power play between written language\, voice\, tone and body as they move into a natural hierarchy\, like a living being evolving as one pushes the other out of focus. \nArthur is an experimental band.
